Engineering for the Future: ADS Supports Door Panel Development for Zoox

The future of transportation isn’t simply about improving the vehicles we already know. Sometimes, innovation means starting from the ground up.

That’s exactly the approach behind Zoox, a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing. With its symmetrical design, carriage-style interior and unique sliding door configuration, the Zoox vehicle challenges many of the conventions that have defined automotive design for generations.

ADS had the opportunity to contribute to that innovation through the development of door panels for the Zoox vehicle—putting our engineering expertise, problem-solving capabilities and product-development experience to work on a vehicle unlike anything traditionally found on the road.

Developing Components for an Unconventional Vehicle

Traditional vehicles are designed around a driver. The location of the steering wheel, controls, seats, doors and structural components are all influenced by that fundamental requirement.

Zoox approached mobility differently.

Its robotaxi was designed without traditional driver controls and with passengers positioned in opposing rows within the cabin. The vehicle also incorporates large sliding, subway-style doors designed to provide convenient passenger entry and exit without doors swinging outward into surrounding traffic or sidewalks.

That creates an entirely different set of considerations for components such as the door panels.

For ADS, projects like this are where engineering becomes more than simply producing a component to print. It requires understanding how design intent, packaging requirements, surrounding components, manufacturing processes, materials and assembly all have to work together.

Turning Design Intent Into a Manufacturable Solution

Bringing an innovative product from concept toward production requires continuous collaboration between design and engineering.

During the door panel development process, ADS worked within the unique requirements of the Zoox vehicle to help transform design concepts into components that could meet real-world manufacturing and assembly requirements.

That development process requires careful consideration of factors including:

  • Component geometry and packaging

  • Material selection and manufacturing feasibility

  • Attachment and assembly strategies

  • Fit and interface with surrounding components

  • Repeatability and production requirements

  • Quality and dimensional consistency

Each decision can influence another part of the system. Changes that appear minor on the surface can affect tooling, assembly, structural interfaces or the overall appearance of the finished component.

ADS brings these considerations together early in the development process, helping identify potential challenges before they become costly production problems.

Engineering and Manufacturing Working Together

One of the advantages ADS brings to product development is the ability to look at a project from both an engineering and manufacturing perspective.

A successful component needs to do more than look right in CAD.

It has to be produced.

It has to assemble correctly.

It has to perform consistently.

And it has to meet the quality expectations of the finished product.

By considering those requirements throughout development, our team works to bridge the gap between innovative concepts and practical manufacturing solutions.

The Zoox door panel project demonstrates the value of that approach. When working with a completely new vehicle architecture, there isn’t always an established automotive solution to follow. Engineering teams must evaluate new possibilities, solve new problems and continually refine the product as the overall vehicle develops.

Innovation Is a Collaborative Process

Projects at the forefront of mobility require collaboration.

Zoox itself describes the development of its robotaxi as an iterative process in which industrial design, engineering and manufacturing evolved together as the vehicle moved from early concepts to a customer-focused platform.

That philosophy closely aligns with the way ADS approaches product development.

Rather than viewing engineering, manufacturing and innovation as separate disciplines, we see them as interconnected parts of the same process.

Engineering transforms ideas into practical solutions.

Manufacturing expertise ensures those solutions can be produced consistently and efficiently.

Innovation happens when teams are willing to rethink traditional approaches and find a better way forward.

The development of the Zoox door panels brought all three together.

Helping Build What Comes Next

The automotive industry continues to evolve rapidly as electrification, autonomous technology and new mobility concepts change what vehicles look like—and what they are capable of doing.

Those changes create new challenges for product developers, but they also create tremendous opportunities.

At ADS, we’re proud to apply our experience to programs that push engineering beyond conventional solutions. From early product development and engineering through manufacturing support, our team helps customers turn challenging concepts into tangible components.

Our work supporting door panel development for Zoox is one example of what’s possible when engineering expertise and innovative thinking come together.

Because sometimes the next generation of transportation requires more than improving what already exists.

It requires building something entirely new.
